Transcription and reproduction of Joey Calderazzo's Jazz Piano Solo on Black Nile (Wayne Shorter) as recorded on the album "the traveler" (BlueNote) 1993. Hi. Thank you for your question. I apologize for the bad quality of the video. I did this a long time ago. A more recent video with a better quality is here ua-cam.com/video/NGjp_fd5V1A/v-deo.html in which I play a transcription of a cuban style montuno which also emphasizes the rumba clave very nicely. There is also sheet music which I put in the other video for you to practice. Good luck 😃☀

This is the only Toccatina where I can actually follow the pulse all the way through! Kapustin's recording had parts where I lost the beat and couldn't convince my ears that the measure lines were where they were.
Kapustin often writes like that on purpose. The drums give a different feel to it, allowing you to know where the measure lines are all the time, but Kapustin often makes measure lines unclear.
It’s a hemiola. That tempo thing is on purpose
Thank you, I grew up listening to my fathers jazz records, so its a second language, so when I first heard this piece played by Yuja Wang it immediately sounded like a jazz piece, and hearing this it definitely is. Great posts

This is the best Toccatina. I agree with Frederick Gestwicki. "Everybody decides they're going to be the World's Speediest Speed Freak. "Watch how fast I can sound these notes" is not a legitimate style of interpretation. " So right!

I think this is pretty much common knowledge. Nahre is a pro and she does a good job collecting material. I have derived this exercise from lessons of my former Jazz Piano Teacher Leonid Chizhik.

I am not sure what you are referring to. I used two cameras and my recording and had premiere pro synchronise the parts. To me it looks pretty satisfactory.
@@StephanPareigis I figured it out...the first four or so bars of the solo are repeated on the next page....and also, my Comcast sucks, sometimes videos get out of sync with their audio. Great job with it though, it there a printable version?

I love this! I've heard it played so many times in a rushed way where the basic pulse is obscured, and this felt so solid and rhythmic...so fun! Probably my new favorite of this Toccatina :)
